Advocacy for California’s independent live entertainment community
NIVA California works to protect, strengthen, and advance independent venues, promoters, festivals, and the communities they serve.
California Ticketing Reform: Veto Requested on AB 1349, AB 1720 Held
On August 13, the Senate Appropriations Committee held AB 1720 — the California Fans First Act — on its suspense file, ending the 10% resale cap push for this two-year session without a floor vote. AB 1349, which targets speculative listings, bots, and deceptive box-office sites, was substantially rewritten by Senate amendments adopted August 28. NIVA California withdrew its support and is asking Governor Newsom to veto the bill.
- Where things stand: AB 1720 (Haney) is done for this two-year session; a new bill is expected when the Legislature reconvenes in December. AB 1349 (Bryan) passed the Assembly 66–0 and cleared Senate policy committees unanimously, but August 28 amendments added carve-outs that shift legal exposure onto independent venues, festivals, and promoters. NIVA California and a coalition of music, labor, venue, and consumer organizations now oppose it.
- Why it matters: Speculative listings and spoofed box-office sites leave independent venues absorbing the confusion, disputes, and reputational damage from prices they never set.
- What we’re asking for: A veto of AB 1349 — and venue-level stories to build the record for the next resale bill.
- What you can do today: Email [email protected] with how resale practices have harmed your room, and join advocacy alerts so you can move quickly when the next bill arrives in December.
